Asarum canadense

(Canada wild ginger)

Growth: Low, colony-forming, spreading by rhizome. This native perennial herb is a natural groundcover in woodlands and in shaded landscapes. Prefers moist, humus-rich, acidic soils in part to full shade.

Characteristics: Each plant is comprised of a pair of large, velvety, heart-shaped leaves, with a small dark red flower blooming in early spring between the leaf stalks, often hidden by its foliage. Quickly spreading by fleshy rhizomes, Canada wild ginger forms a dense groundcover that may out-compete smaller, more delicate groundcovers. Rhizomes have a gingery scent.
