Astilbe chinensis (Chinese astilbe)

 

These blushing beauties in all their frothiness belong in a French impressionist painting with a girl in a pastel-coloured dress holding a parasol. Or…  you can grow them in your Zone 3 shade garden, where they can reliably withstand winter temperatures of  -40 degrees! During the summer, keep them shaded and moist for best flowering. They also last well as a cut flower.

 

Growth:  clump forming, rhizomatous

Characteristics:  grown for its striking plume-like flowers

Leaves:  dark green leaves in groups of three, pointed, toothed, softly hairy
