Dictamnus albus var. purpurea

(Gas plant)

Growth: Upright, rounded clump, bushy.  Grow in the herbaceous border, cottage garden or in a woodland setting.

Characteristics:  Dictamnus may take up to 4 years to begin flowering and due to its deep tap root, dislikes transplanting after it is established. This plant produces a flammable oil which can actually be lit with a match on very hot, dry days. Performs best in full to part sun and moist, well-drained soil.

Colours: Glossy dark green, pinnate foliage exudes a faint citrus smell when crushed. Spikes of pink butterfly-shaped flowers with darker red veins bloom from the top down in late spring to early summer, followed by star-shaped seed pods in fall. Excellent cut flower.
