Epimedium x versicolor ‘Sulphureum’

(Bicolor barrenwort)

Growth: Clumping, rhizomatous, low-growing. Grow as an edger or groundcover in a shade border or in a woodland or naturalized garden. Prefers part sun to shade and an average, well-drained soil. Grows well under trees. Drought tolerant when established.

Characteristics: This is a fascinating early spring bloomer, so don’t miss it! Delicate, short-spurred two-toned yellow flowers bloom in open sprays on wiry stems before new foliage begins to grow. As flowers mature and begin to bend down to the ground, new heart-shaped, red-flushed leaves emerge, which mature to green in summer and redden again in fall. Semi-evergreen, but best to cut back old foliage in late fall or very early spring before flowering.
