(Northern oak fern)

Growth: Upright, rhizomatous, clump-forming native perennial with erect stems. Grow in part to full shade, in cool, moist soil. Perfect for the woodland or naturalized shade garden. Spreads by both rhizomes and spores. 

Characteristics: Fiddleheads emerge in spring on delicate, hairless stems that can reach up to 12” (30cm) long. Each stem bears three fronds of triangular, compound leaves. 

Colours: Fresh green foliage. Round brown spores appear on the underside of the leaflets near the edges.
