Liatris spicata

(Dense blazing star)

Growth: Upright, clump-forming with erect stems. Grow in the perennial border, cottage garden, prairie or meadow garden. Native to eastern US.

Characteristics: Non-stop bloom from mid-summer to fall frost. Performs best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Deer resistant, pest-free.

Colours:   Mauve flowers rise above the finely textured, grassy foliage on striking long spikes which bloom from the top down. Foliage turns attractive bronze colour in fall. Flowers entirely encircle the stem, creating a fluffy, pom pom-like spike. Each mauve, button-shaped floret resembles a blazing star.
