Papaver orientale ‘Brilliant’

(‘Brilliant’ oriental poppy)

Growth: Clump-forming with upright flower stems. Oriental poppy usually goes dormant in late summer, so make sure to plant something bushy beside it to bloom in its place. A staple in the herbaceous border, cottage garden or dotted throughout a naturalized meadow. Performs best in full sun and the full range of well-drained soil types.

Characteristics: The ‘Brilliant’ cv. of oriental poppies is famous for its depictions in the paintings of American artist Georgia O’Keefe. Huge, fiery scarlet red blooms with black centres arise on hairy stems from a low clump of  grey-green leaves in early summer. Hugely attractive to butterflies, this plant is deer and rabbit resistant. May self-seed.
