Pyrola asarifolia

(Bog wintergreen)

Growth: Small, clump-forming with erect stems. Native perennial whose natural habitat is swamps, bogs and moist woodlands. Grow in the front of a moist shade border or in a naturalized woodland setting in part to full shade.

Characteristics: Evergreen, round to kidney-shaped, leathery, shiny basal leaves in small clumps. Slender stalks rise above the foliage bearing loose racemes of small pink and white, 5-petalled, downward facing florets with dark pink stamens hidden under the upper petals. A protruding green style curves down like an elephant’s trunk below the base of each floret. Blooms in June-July.

Colours: Bold, dark green foliage. Flowers have rich golden yellow petal rays with a dark brown centre disk.
