Growth: Rhizomatous, clump-forming, with upright flowering stems. A native perennial herb growing in moist woodland habitats. Grow as shady groundcover, in the shady cottage garden or in a naturalized woodland setting. Performs best in moist, humus-rich soil.

Characteristics: Bright green lance-shaped leaves clasp the stem in opposite formation. Loose clusters of white, star-shaped flowers appear at the tips of the stem in late spring. Flowers mature to round berries which are purplish-black at maturity.
