Vaccineum vitis-idaea
(Lingonberry/
Mountain cranberry)
Growth: A member of the Heath family, Lingonberry is a short, mat-forming, evergreen woody sub-shrub native to the arctic tundra and subarctic boreal forests across the world’s Northern Hemisphere. With its extreme cold hardiness, it is a useful and beautiful groundcover for highly acidic, moist but well-drained soils in northern gardens. A natural groundcover for an open woodland garden in full to dappled sun.
Characteristics: Small, glossy, dark green leaves form a creeping mat. Pinkish white urn-shaped flowers bloom in spring, producing single red, acidic, edible berries in summer. Flowers attract bees and other insects and berries are a “superfood” for humans, high in antioxidants and vitamin C.
